UX Designer Invoice Template

A free, editable invoice template built for freelance UX designers — with the line items and billing conventions your clients expect. Load the example, make it yours, download the PDF.

UX invoices mirror how the work actually unfolds: discovery, then design, then validation — each a phase with its own fee and its own invoice. Phase billing isn't just cash-flow hygiene; it's what keeps 'can you just mock this up first?' from consuming discovery for free.

Research deliverables deserve explicit lines. Interviews, usability sessions, and synthesis reports are invisible-by-default work — the invoice is where they become visible, valued, and therefore repeatable in the next engagement.

What goes on a UX designer's invoice

UX designers bill discovery as a paid fixed-price phase (never free), design phases per screen-set or sprint, and research per study — sessions plus report. A 40–50% deposit opens the engagement; design-system work bills as a product: build, documentation, and handoff. Out-of-scope screens are quoted, not absorbed.

The mistake UX designers most often make on invoices

Starting design before the discovery invoice is paid. It signals discovery was ceremonial — and the client who skipped paying for discovery will also dispute the redesigns that skipping discovery caused. The invoice sequence is the project's spine: each phase paid before the next begins.

Not sure your underlying rate is right? Run the numbers in the freelance UX designer rate calculator — typical rates for UX designers run $60–$150/hour. And if an invoice goes quiet, use our late-payment email templates to chase it politely.
